| Background |
| |
Bolivia,
named after independence fighter Simon Bolivar,
broke away from Spanish rule in 1825; much of its
subsequent history has consisted of a series of
nearly 200 coups and countercoups. Comparatively
democratic civilian rule was established in 1982,
but leaders have faced difficult problems of deep-seated
poverty, social unrest, and illegal drug production.
In December 2005, Bolivians elected Movement Toward
Socialism leader Evo Morales President - by the
widest margin of any leader since the restoration
of civilian rule in 1982 - after he ran on a promise
to change the country's traditional political class
and empower the nation's poor majority. |

Bolivia, Work begun: 1922
SAM-Bolivia
is working in two distinct locations: The lowlands of
Santa Cruz and the high Andes Mountains of La Paz. The
Mission is serving with our national brothers to develop
dynamic, self-supporting churches who reach out to their
communities and move forward in missions. The
Bolivia team is a growing, unified field that enjoys
diversified ministries such as leadership development,
ministry teams, preparing and sending national missionaries,
aviation outreach, medical ministry and a Christian
school. South America Mission works with two separate
church associations:
The La Paz
church association has over 40 active churches.
The Santa
Cruz church association has over 30 active churches
with additional congregations.
Present
